Momentum is so much more than just an aesthetically-pleasing background.

It’s a productivity tool that helps to boost daily focus but also supports your digital well-being by improving mindfulness.

Here is everything you need to know about Momentum and how to get the most out of this Chrome extension.

I remember the day when I first spotted a Momentum dashboard on Instagram.

It was during the early days of @notesbythalia. I was scrolling through a “desk inspo” hashtag when I saw the picture which would change the game. There was a laptop on a desk with a scroll-stopping landscape image accompanied by the words “Good morning” next to the name of the profile I was on.

At the time, my laptop was a mess. I hadn’t created my own desktop organiser yet and my browser’s default was the standard Google search page. I didn’t know it was possible for someone’s laptop screen to look this good.

As I tapped on the picture, @momentumdash came up. I Googled it straight away and within 5-mins I had added the extension to my browser. I was officially the proud owner of an aesthetically-pleasing “new tab” window.

And I’ve been a Momentum dash girl ever since!

But it’s not just about having a visually attractive background.

Momentum is a productivity tool that helps to boost daily focus and concentration but also supports your digital well-being by improving mindfulness.

What is Momentum Dash?

Momentum is a Chrome extension for your browser. It transforms your ‘new tab’ page into a focused, productive, and inspiring dashboard. So every time you open a new tab you’ll be greeted with a stunning landscape picture and the current time.

And unlike the standard (and uninspiring) ‘new tab’ on Chrome, this is your own personal space. You can customise your Momentum dashboard with your name for that extra bit of encouragement and insta-worthy aesthetic.

Plus, you’ll also get a daily mantra and inspirational quote to provide you with the “momentum” to keep pushing forward.

So if you’re looking for a way to freshen up your browser and start each day with some motivation, then Momentum is the perfect extension for you.

Momentum is completely free to start and continue using.

However, if you would like some added features to boost your productivity and well-being then I suggest upgrading to Momentum Plus.

Momentum Plus explained

With Momentum Plus you can add further features, customisation, widgets, integrations and more.

Get access to time-sensitive countdowns so you can see friendly reminders for important events or set deadlines for tasks, metrics so you can keep important numbers at the top of your mind and world clocks so you can track the time in other countries.

Maximise your productivity and improve organisation with a built-in digital notepad and custom to-do lists which are visible on each tab.

What’s even better is that the integration feature allows you to sync your daily tasks with your favourite digital productivity tools.

Momentum Plus integrates seamlessly with Asana, Basecamp, ClickUp, Google Tasks, Todoist, Trello and other apps.

As you know, I use Notion and refuse to switch so at the moment I am unable to benefit fully from the integration feature. But hopefully one day, my dreams will come true and I’ll be able to use both of these tools at the same time.

Wow! Could you imagine? I think my head would probably explode!

Momentum Plus also gives you access to a Pomodoro Timer so you can break up your work into focused intervals or short breaks and an Autofocus Mode so you can concentrate on just one to-do list item at a time.

And you can now also add soundscapes. So if like me, you love listening to instrumental music to help find your “flow state” then Momentum Plus has you covered here too. Enjoy a collection of scenic background sounds including a campfire, beach, forest and thunderstorm to name a few.

Soundscapes are a great way to maintain focus as it subtly helps you avoid silence as well as drown out distracting noise.

The nature sounds are also perfect for meditation, relaxing and finding a moment of calm during a busy day.

With Momentum Plus you can add your own images or choose from your Momentum stock favourites as well as add a library of your own favourite quotes. You also have the ability to skip and refresh your daily picture or quote if they are not quite hitting your needs for that particular day.

You know I’m all about finding the right tools for my needs.

How to use Momentum Plus to support your productivity and well-being

You know I’m all about a healthier and more sustainable way of working.

And I feel like Momentum Plus encourages that mindful approach to productivity. It allows you to fill up your day with moments of mindfulness, reflection and balance.

Which is probably why I love this tool so much!

So let me introduce you to a few of the most defining features and how you can use your Momentum dashboard to boost your productivity, but also support your digital well-being at the same time.

1 | Use the Pomodoro Timer to remind you to take a break

Breaks are an essential part of your working day as they allow you to pause, breathe and rest before the next set of tasks.

However, taking breaks can sometimes drop down your list of priorities especially if you have a lot on your plate. Or if you’re deep in the zone, you might simply forget.

And that’s where the Pomodoro Timer on Momentum Plus comes in.

As it reminds you to take a break!

Yes, you can use this feature for ultimate productivity by setting a 25-mins countdown where you just concentrate on one task, but it also doubles as a break timer too!

Easily set your timer when you want to be reminded to take your break and press start. You can choose whether you want your timer to countdown the seconds or have a more calm approach where you just see how many minutes are left on the clock.

The timer displays on each tab and will run in the background when Chrome is open which allows you to continue your workflow.

And once the alarm goes off, you know it’s time for your break.

Indulge in a bit of self-care, pop to the kitchen for a snack, get some fresh air or simply sit and do nothing.

The time is yours.

2 | Keep track of daily tasks with Todo

Since becoming a full-time digital nomad, I have been looking for ways to minimise my belongings.

And sadly, one of the things I have decided to stop using is physical notebooks. This means that my planning, note-taking and to-do listing are now all done digitally.

I therefore can’t live without the Todo feature on Momentum Plus.

It allows me to write my daily to-do’s in a place where I know I’ll see them and tick them off as I go along.

A lot of my workload is done on the internet so having my to-do’s pop up every time I open a new tab, also allows me to keep track and stay focused.

It’s a nice subtle reminder that fits in with my mindful approach to productivity.

3 | Limit daily distractions and mindless browsing

One of the best things about my Momentum dashboard is the fact that it hides my most frequently used apps and “recommend pages” on Google’s default tab.

I’m not perfect and I am prone to browsing e-comm sites, social media and of course Youtube.

And classic Google likes to remind me of those frequently visited pages to entice me into clicking on them again.

But now that Momentum has transformed my “new tab” into an inspiring and productive space, I no longer have the urge to mindlessly browse.

So every time I add a new tab, instead of being distracted by recommended pages and clicking on one of them, I can continue on my mission and search for the page I need.

Give it a go now, add Momentum to your Chrome extensions and say hello to fewer distractions!

4 | Create a shutdown routine by using Balance Mode

My entire ethos is to promote a healthy work-life balance. One where productivity and self-care can work side by side and you don’t need to sacrifice one over the other.

And one of the ways I encourage this is through setting boundaries and building a shutdown routine.

A shutdown routine can help switch your brain off from work mode, calm the mind and ease you into the evening. Your shutdown routine can be anywhere between 5–30 minutes but I suggest making it simple enough to remember so you can easily apply it every day.

What I love about Momentum Plus is that it has a Balance Mode which encourages healthy work-life balance boundaries.

Balance Mode enables you to hide productivity features during your downtime hours so you are not tempted to continue with your to-do list at night or during non-work hours.

You can easily enable Balance Mode on the control panel when you need. Or you can set a custom schedule with when to turn on “downtime” and when to turn it off. You can also choose what days to apply it to. Either on weekdays, every day or on your own custom schedule.

It’s such a great feature and I can’t wait for you to try it out!
